Our #1 Recommended Service
The best time to protect your wood fence is right after it's built — before the first rain, before UV damage sets in, before the wood starts to gray. Pre-staining delivers deeper penetration, richer color, and protection that lasts years longer.

About This Service
Most homeowners don't realize that a brand new wood fence is actually at its most vulnerable — and its most receptive to staining — in the days immediately after installation. Raw, freshly-milled lumber has open pores and minimal surface contamination, which means stain penetrates deeper and bonds more effectively than it ever will again.
Once a fence is exposed to San Diego's coastal sun, salt air, and occasional rain, the wood begins to gray and weather. Tannins leach out, the surface becomes contaminated with dust and mildew, and the wood's ability to absorb stain diminishes significantly. Staining at this point requires more preparation, more product, and still doesn't achieve the same depth of penetration as pre-staining.
Tom Sawyer Fence Painting works directly with fence installation companies across San Diego County to pre-stain new fences right after they're built — while the wood is clean, dry, and ready to absorb. We use Stain & Seal Experts EXPERT® oil stain — a deep-penetrating, oil-based formula that locks out moisture, protects against UV damage, and conditions the wood to prevent warping and cracking. We are a Stain & Seal Experts approved vendor.
The result is a fence that looks richer, stays protected longer, and requires less maintenance over its lifetime. Pre-staining is the single best investment you can make in a new wood fence — and it costs a fraction of what fence restoration or replacement will cost if you wait.
New wood has open, uncontaminated pores. Stain penetrates deeper than it ever will again — creating a stronger bond and longer-lasting protection.
Fresh wood absorbs stain evenly and vibrantly. The result is richer, more consistent color that enhances the natural grain beautifully.
Pre-staining extends the life of your fence significantly. Homeowners who pre-stain typically go 4–6 years before needing maintenance vs. 2–3 years otherwise.
UV rays, salt air, and moisture start degrading your fence immediately after installation. Pre-staining blocks all three from the very first day.

We use Stain & Seal Experts oil-based stain for transparent through semi-solid applications, and Behr Premium for solid color requests. Other products available upon request.

We check the moisture content of the wood with a moisture meter. New wood should be below 15% moisture before staining for best results. We'll advise if we need to wait a bit longer.
New fences typically need minimal preparation — we remove any sawdust, construction debris, and check for any mill glaze that could inhibit absorption.
Using professional spray equipment, we apply your chosen Stain & Seal Experts EXPERT® oil stain evenly across all surfaces. New wood absorbs stain beautifully, resulting in rich, even color and deep protection.
Ideally within 2–6 weeks of installation. This gives the wood time to dry out from the kiln-drying process while still being clean and open-pored. Waiting longer than 3 months significantly reduces the effectiveness of pre-staining.
New wood has open pores that haven't been contaminated by dirt, mildew, or weathering. Stain penetrates much deeper into new wood, creating a stronger bond and longer-lasting protection. Once wood has weathered and grayed, you need to strip and brighten it before staining — adding cost and effort.
For new wood, we use Stain & Seal Experts EXPERT® oil stain — a deep-penetrating, oil-based formula that locks out moisture, protects against UV damage, and conditions the wood to prevent warping and cracking. We're a Stain & Seal Experts approved vendor. For solid color applications, we use Behr Premium solid color stain.
While DIY staining is possible, professional application with spray equipment achieves more even coverage and better penetration than brush or roller application. We also ensure proper surface preparation and product selection for your specific wood type and climate exposure.
