New Fence? Stain or Paint It Right the First Time

A new fence is the best time to protect it. Here is what to do in the first weeks after install, for wood and metal fences, anywhere in San Diego County.

Wood Fences: Protect Them Before the Sun Does

Fresh cedar, redwood and pressure-treated lumber starts to gray once San Diego sun and moisture reach it. Bare wood also takes stain best while it is clean, before dirt and mildew settle into the grain. That is why we recommend finishing a new wood fence early instead of waiting a year or two.

  • Pre-staining (best): boards are stained on all sides, including the faces that get covered once the fence is assembled. See new fence pre-staining.
  • Staining right after install: the next best option when the fence is already built. See wood fence staining.
  • Solid stain or paint: for an even color or to match the house. See staining vs. painting.

Redwood and Cedar: Watch for Tannin Bleed

New redwood and cedar contain natural tannins. When rain or sprinklers hit unfinished boards, those tannins can run and leave brown streaks on concrete, block walls and stucco. Sealing the wood early helps. Read our tannin bleed guide for what to do if it has already happened.

Metal Fences and Gates: Prep Is Everything

New galvanized steel and new or reinstalled wrought iron need the right prep before paint, or the coating can peel. See painting a new galvanized steel fence and painting wrought iron before it goes back up, or our iron fence painting service.

New-fence pre-staining runs $16–$22 per linear foot and is usually priced by material. Working With Your Fence Builder

Many San Diego fence installers already coordinate with us so the stain goes on right after the build. If your installer is not set up with us yet, tell us who they are when you call and we will coordinate the timing. Installers can see our page for fence builders. Frequently Asked Questions

How soon should I stain a new wood fence?+

The sooner the better. Pre-staining before or right at install is ideal. If the fence is already up, staining in the first weeks protects the wood before it starts to gray.

Do I have to wait for pressure-treated wood to dry?+

Pressure-treated lumber is often wet from treatment. We check the wood on site and schedule staining when it is ready to absorb stain.

Should I stain or paint my new fence?+

Stain shows the wood grain and is easier to maintain; paint or solid stain gives an even color. Our staining vs. painting guide walks through the choice.

How much does it cost?+

Pre-staining runs $16–$22 per linear foot. Staining an existing fence runs $7–$10 per linear foot per side and painting runs $7–$12 per linear foot per side. Gates and other items are quoted after a free estimate.
