About This Service

Professional Wood Fence Staining in San Diego County

Wood fences are a beautiful addition to any San Diego property — but without proper protection, they can quickly deteriorate under our coastal sun, salt air, and occasional rain. At Tom Sawyer Fence Painting, we specialize in bringing wood fences back to life and keeping them looking great for years.

Whether you have a brand new fence that needs its first coat of stain, or an aging fence that needs stripping, brightening, and refinishing, our team has the expertise and the right products for the job. We use Stain & Seal Experts EXPERT® oil stain — a deep-penetrating, oil-based formula that locks out moisture, protects against UV damage, and conditions the wood to prevent warping and cracking. For full-coverage solid applications, we use Behr Premium solid color stain.

Our process begins with a thorough assessment of your fence's condition. We then prepare the surface with pressure washing and wood brightener to open the wood grain and ensure maximum stain penetration. Finally, we apply your chosen stain with professional spray equipment, achieving a smooth, even finish that brushwork simply cannot match.

We serve all of San Diego County, from Oceanside to Chula Vista, and our work is backed by our satisfaction guarantee. If you're not happy, we'll make it right.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I stain my wood fence?

Most wood fences in San Diego benefit from re-staining every 2–4 years, depending on the product used, sun exposure, and fence condition. Semi-transparent oil stains typically need more frequent reapplication than solid stains.

What stain products do you use?

We use Stain & Seal Experts EXPERT® oil stain for transparent, semi-transparent, and semi-solid applications — a deep-penetrating, oil-based formula that locks out moisture and protects against UV damage. For solid color applications, we use Behr Premium solid color stain. Other products are available upon client request.

Do I need to be home during the job?

Not necessarily. As long as we have access to the fence and a water source, our crew can complete the work while you're away. We'll send you photos and a completion notice when done.

How long does it take for the stain to dry?

Most oil stains are dry to the touch within 2–4 hours and fully cured within 24–48 hours, depending on temperature and humidity. We'll advise you on any precautions before we leave.

Can you stain a fence that has never been stained before?

Absolutely — new fences are great candidates for staining. We recommend waiting 6–12 months after installation for the wood to dry before applying stain for best results. For brand-new fences, consider our Pre-Staining service for even better protection.

What's the difference between staining and painting a fence?

Staining penetrates the wood grain and allows the natural texture to show through, while paint sits on the surface and hides the grain. Stain typically requires less prep, is easier to maintain, and looks more natural. Paint offers more color options and full coverage for heavily weathered wood.
